Amos 9 (Temporary English Version - TempEV) printable version

1 I saw my lord standing on the altar, and he said:
"Strike the capital and the thresholds will shake.
Break them on all their heads.
Those left, I will kill with the sword;
not one who runs away shall get away,
not a fugitive shall escape.

2 If they dig to Sheol,
from there my hand will take them;
if they climb to the skies,
from there I will bring them down.

3 If they hide on Carmel's crest,
from there I will seek and take them;
if they hide away from my eye on the sea bed,
there I will command the serpent,
and it will bite them.

4 if they go into captivity before their enemies,
there I will command the sword,
and it will kill them.
I will fix my eye on them
for evil and not for good.

5 My Lord Adonai, of armies,
who touches the land and it trembles,
and everyone who lives in it mourns,
and all of it rises like the Nile,
and sinks like the Nile in Egypt;

6 who builds his stairway in the sky,
and founds his vault upon the land;
who calls for the sea's waters,
and pours them out across the land-
Adonai is his name.

7 Are you not like the Africans to me,
children of Israel?
Adonai.'s oracle.
Did I not bring Israel up from the land of Egypt,
and the Philistines from Caphtor
and the Arameans from Kir?

8 Look!
The eyes of my Lord Adonai are on the guilty kingdom:
"I will destroy it from upon the earth
- yet I will not completely destroy Jacob's house."
Adonai's oracle.

9 "So, look! I am giving the order,
and I will shake the house of Israel among all the nations
like being shaken in a sieve,
and no pebble falls to the earth.

10 All the guilty among my people shall die by the sword,
who say, "Evil will not come near us nor catch us."

11 On that day I will raise up
David's hut that's fallen,
and I will repair its breaches,
and its ruins I'll raise up,
and I'll rebuild it as in the days of old;

12 as a result they will possess the remains of Edom
and all the nations who are called by my name.
Oracle of Adonai who does this.

13 Days are surely coming, (Oracle of Adonai)
when the reaper will be chased by the plowman,
and the grape treaders by the seed sowers;
the mountains will drip sweet wine,
and all the hills flow with it.

14 I will return the exiles of my people Israel,
and they shall build the ruined cities and inhabit them;
they shall plant vineyards and drink the wine,
and they shall make orchards and eat their fruit.

15 I will plant them on their land,
and they shall not be uprooted again
out of the land that I have given them.
Said Adonai your God.
