Lectionaries are lists of passages to be read in a liturgy. Jewish lectionaries prescribe both a reading from both the Torah and the Prophets. Using a lectionary ensures that a variety of biblical passages are used, not just a leader's favorites. Both churches and synagogues have used lectionaries from ancient times till today.
