(Greek) "piece cut out", a unit of text, originally for liturgical use. The traditional Jewish pericopae (the plural) are indicated in the Hebrew text of the Bible (by the letters פ and ס standing alone). Chapter and verse divisions are a convenience added in the middle ages.
