אכל 'kl "eat" a very common word.  Fire "eats", particularly in the punishments declared in Amos chs 1-2 (1:4, 7, 10, 12, 14; 2:2, 5) but not only there (5:6; 7:4); while the word is used literally too, of locusts (4:9; 7:2) and of humans (6:4; 7:12; 9:14).
