תְּאֵנָה te'ennah "fig, fig tree" as in Am 4:9. Fig trees provided welcome shade and convenient (particularly when dried) and sweet fruit. It was, and still is, a favorite in the region, and served as a picture of providence. The true "fig" ficus carica is not the same as the sycamore, or mulberry fig ficus sycomorus which Amos tended ( 7:14 ).
