יְאֹר ye'or "Nile" originally borrowed from Egyptian, this is the name for the river, and used also for its tributaries and canals. Its use four times in Amos (8:8; 9:5) suggests the importance of exodus traditions in this book. (The word "Nile" is more frequent in Amos than in the book of Exodus!)

However in Amos the rising and falling of the Nile is a picture for the terror of earthquake.
