A God Who Changes His Mind?

According to much theology, nurtured in Western thought patterns, the notion of a perfect and all-knowing God who changes his mind is unthinkable. Texts like Am 7:2-3 or 5-6, then have to be explained away - they cannot mean what they seem to say.

However, the notion that intercessory prayer does something is also part of most religious people's theology!

The sense of the Bible is clear. There are numerous places where we are told that as a result of some human's intercession God changes his plans. A God who did not could hardly be called personal, for personality involves us in interaction!

As a pastor turned biblical scholar I am happy to leave the systematic outworking of this notion to others. There are already several good, if difficult books on the subject of a God who changes!
